1-15. ENGINE AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
Figure 1-20. Engine Air Intake System
The Engine Air Intake System consists of a dry-type air cleaner (1, Figure 1-20),
turbocharger (2), and a Charge Air Cooler (CAC) (3). The turbocharger increases engine
horsepower by delivering a higher volume of air to the engine.
The turbocharger
compresses the air and delivers it to the CAC. The air flows through the CAC which cools
the air before it is delivered to the engine cylinders. The air aspiration tubes (4) are
wrapped with a layer of insulating material to prevent the charged air being reheated
before it enters the engine inlet manifold (5). The compressed air/fuel mixture allows more
complete burning of the fuel.
The result is an increase in horsepower and lower
emissions.
